MSBA vs. MBBA CAST OFF, MYSTERY TRIP AND MSBA CASTING TEAM TRYOUTS

MSBA vs MBBA Stan Gibbs Memorial Cast Off May 17
by Patrick Paquette

Four years ago, some good natured ribbing between officers of MSBA and our sister organization MBBA
evolved into the good time known as the Stan Gibbs Memorial Cast Off.  For each of the last four years, MSBA
has been lucky enough to take home the very prized trophy and bragging rights.  This year, the Cast Off will be
hosted by MBBA at their Annual Spring Meet located at Scusset Beach State Park on Saturday May 17 at
3pm.  The MBBA has graciously invited all MSBA members to come and enjoy the whole day at the Spring
Meet and participate in the many raffles, cook out items, etc., that occur throughout the day.  Just show your
MSBA membership card at the gatehouse to the park when you arrive at Scusset.

MSBA operatives have learned the MBBA is getting very geared up for a serious run at the Trophy this year
and we need all the MSBA members we can get to come out and support you team as they compete in this
"One for The Thumb" attempt at a Fifth Victory in a row.  This is a great way to wrap up a morning of fishing the
Canal and end up having some good fellowship and fun with both MSBA and MBBA members.

As has become the custom, on years MBBA is hosting the Cast Off,  MSBA will have Team Cast Off Tryouts
one week before the event on Sunday, May 11.  We will meet at 12:30 PM at the Dunkin Donuts located at the
commercial area off Exit 1 on Route 3 (site of the former Sagamore Rotary) just before the Sagamore Bridge.
We will meet at 12:30 PM and travel down to Scusset Beach State Park and hold the tryouts at the exact
location of the Cast Off the following week.  We will take the top six casters for the team and need two alternate
members in the case of emergency.  We need all MSBA distance casters to take this event seriously and show
up to represent the club, our history and keep the Trophy at home.  In order to encourage member participation,
MSBA will conduct a Mystery Trip earlier that morning.  Come on out and support your club at both the Tryouts
and the Cast Off whether you are a member of the team or not.

MSBA Mystery Trip Sunday May 11
by Patrick Paquette

On Sunday May 11 we will meet at the Dunkin Donuts off Exit 1 on Route 3 just before the Sagamore Bridge
at the early hour of 4:45 am.  At 5:15 sharp we will pull out of the parking lot headed for what we anticipate will
be a morning filled with bent rods and even some pulling drag.  Any member in good standing is welcome to
attend and you can bring a friend as we will have instant membership kits available for you to sign up your
fishing buddies.  Members coming are suggested to have waders and be prepared for a chilly morning with a
surf jacket or heavy sweatshirt and dress in layers as the weather at this time of year will start out very chilly in
the am and then heat up T-shirts and sunglasses by the time we return to the parking lot at 12:30 for the MSBA
Casting Team Tryouts.  For tackle I suggest members bring two outfits.  First and foremost a 7 or 8 foot light
action rod with 10 lb test mono or 20 lb braid with small jig heads and pearl shad with teasers above.  Small
poppers may work as well.  Although we could run into some keeper fish, the majority of what we will catch will
be fish in the schoolie size so make sure your barbs are crushed so we can release these fish to grow up and
make someone famous.  The second outfit I suggest is a medium heavy 9 or 10 foot rod with 20 lb mono or
heavier braid.  Lures for this outfit should include your favorite 2 oz tins (such as a Hopkins, Point Jude or
Kastmaster), Roberts Rangers, Line Stretchers and the ever successful 1 oz Cotton Cordel Pencil modified
with a single hook dressed with Bucktail or feathers.  If you haven’t figured it out, we are going to take a shot at
some early season Blues after the light tackle Striper Fishing.  I encourage all members to team up and save
gas not only on the ride to the DD but also from the DD we can hop in with each other and share gas costs as
well.  This is how to get involved in the club, so come out and have fun.   We will be back at the DD by 12:30
and those that wish to try out for the casting contest will be back on time.  Hope to see you all there.
