1. Men¹s, women¹s and juniors, largest striper surf, striper boat, bluefish surf, bluefish boat. Largest weight for
combined bluefish and striper. There is also a fly rod division, with the same categories. Pins are given out
each month for the largest of each species, at the meeting. Beautiful plaques and trophies are also given for
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at the end of the season at our annual The Annual Derby is open to all dues paying
members of MSBA without charge, except Life and Honor members who must pay a $5 entry fee.
2. All entrants must have been a member in good standing at least 5 days before date of catch for their entry to
be accepted. The postmark will determine the date dues were paid for those that pay for membership via the
mail.
3. Junior members must be under 17 years of age.
4. The Annual Derby runs from May 1st until November 30th of each year.
5. The Annual Derby is separated into an All Tackle Division and a Fly Rod Division
6. Each Division is separated into the following categories: Men, Women & Juniors.
7. Each Category is separated into either Boat or Shore caught fish.
8. The Angler must cast, hook, fight and bring the fish to gaff or net unaided by any other person. No other
person may touch any part of the tackle during the playing of the fish or give aid other than taking the leader for
gaffing or netting purposes.
9. The only species of fish for this Annual Derby are Bluefish & Striped Bass.
10. Fish are to be measured from tip of mouth to the tip of the tail, with the tape measure being on a flat
surface. (not measured up and over the fish)
11. There is no minimum size for Bluefish in any Division of the Annual Derby.
12. There is a minimum size limit for all Striped Bass entered in the Annual Derby. Minimum size requirements
are as follows:
€ In the Men¹s and Women¹s Categories of the All Tackle Division, the minimum size for Striped Bass to be
entered is 36 inches.
€ In the Junior¹s Category of the All Tackle Division, the minimum size for Striped Bass to be entered will
reflect the legal limit set forth by The Division of Marine Fisheries, not to go below 28 inches.
In all Categories of the Fly Rod Division, the minimum size for Striped Bass to be entered will reflect the
legal limit set forth by The Division of Marine Fisheries, not to go below 28 inches.
13. All fish must be weighed on a State Certified Sealed Scale available at many local tackle shops. Example -
any place of business which sells retail tackle, bait, fishing supplies, rods, lures, etc. To include Marina¹s BUT
the facility must have a State Certified Sealed Scale with the appropriate seal. There will be NO
EXCEPTIONS to this rule. Fish weighed on a Charter Boat scale, a Fishing Club or a Grocery Store, do not
qualify. The Derby Committee will verify entries of potential prize winning fish with the weigh-in station.
14. If the weigh master is a relative of the person weighing the fish, the entry must bear the signature of a
witness who is not related.
15. Weigh slips must be completed by the person who caught the fish and signed and dated by the shop or
authorized person where the fish was weighed in, at the time of weighing the fish.
16. Weigh slips must be postmarked and mailed to the derby chair, within 7 days of CATCH.
17. Official MSBA Weigh Slips and rules can be obtained at MSBA monthly meetings, occasionally in the
Spray or you can contact the Annual Derby Chair.
18. If you do not have an official MSBA weigh slip, you can have the tackle shop fill out one of there own official
weigh slips as long as all of the following information is listed: Annual Derby or Special Tournament, weight in
lbs and oz¹s, length, girth, date of catch, species of fish, man, woman or junior, date of birth, boat or shore,
location (town or area) of catch and state, individuals name and address, weigh masters name, address and
signature, individual who caught the fish¹s signature and the date the slip was filled out by each party.
19. Junior members MUST mark their entries in the appropriate box because the Derby chairman does not
have access to the membership rolls and therefore has no other way of knowing whether an entrant is an
ADULT or JUNIOR.
20. An entrant can enter more than one fish weighed in each month.
21. An entrant can only place ONCE in the same category for each species both per month and per year.
22. An entrant can only win one plaque for Striped Bass and 1 plaque for Bluefish in each Division of the Annual
Derby.
23. No duplicate awards will be given. In case of a tie, the entry with the earliest date of catch will be declared
the winner. If the date caught is the same, then the length will be factored in secondly, followed by the girth if
necessary. If at this point the fish are still the same, the earliest postmark will be used.
24. NO person making a living from commercial fishing, including guides, party boat skippers and crews, will
be eligible to enter fish caught while working at their trade. Entries will be accepted if the aforementioned are
fishing privately for their own personal pleasure and not with a paying party.
25. Any person disqualified from this contest will be referred to the executive committee for disciplinary action.
26. All questions not specifically covered by these rules here set forth, will be resolved by the Derby Committee,
consisting of the Derby Chairman and 2 members appointed by the president of MSBA.
27. Monthly pins will be given out at the MSBA meeting for the largest three fish in each category. The list of
winners for that month and current leaders will be also be announced and placed in the Spray.
28. Traditional Plaques will be given out for the top fish in each category at the Annual Banquet.
29. Trophies will be given out for Second and Third place in each Category at the Annual Banquet.

SOME SUGGESTIONS:
€ If you are not sure that the fish may make the size limit, let it go to grow bigger, catch and release can be a
good thing.
€ Please keep in mind that after the fish is dead, it will lose weight and inches at a rapid pace. Keep the fish on
ice and as cold as possible. Get the fish to the nearest weigh station and get it recorded before this happens,
as on ounce can make a difference between winning and losing.
