MSBA Takes Position on Amendment 16 Recreational Ground fish Options
The very controversial and groundbreaking Amendment 16 to the New England Fishery Management
Council Groundfish Management Plan is nearing final approval.

The Amendment offers three options to meet the mandatory reduction of the recreational harvest of Gulf of
Maine Cod.

Those options are
a) Increase minimum size from current 24” to 26”
b) Decrease bag limit from current ten fish per day to six fish per day or
c) Extend the closed season for two more weeks which means Cod could not be
harvested until April 15 of each year as opposed to the current season which
begins on April 1.

Each of these measures gains an equivalent amount of conservation.

At the May meeting of the Massachusetts Striped Bass Assn, the membership voted to support the
reduction from ten fish to six fish as the clubs position.  The reduced season was a close second choice
and there was very little interest in an increase in the minimum size limit.  A letter will be sent to the NEFMC
demonstrating the club position.
