Rick Newcomb, In His Own Words Before I took over the family business of the tackle shop, many people don’t realize that I used to be in the mining industry. I mined all the way from Arkansas throughout the North West before finally taking over for my mother, who owned the bait shop for 15-years. During my off season I travel and vacation in Cambodia, Thailand, Burma and throughout Southeast Asia.
About 10-years ago I was in Cambodia and thinking to myself – How can I make these trips pay for themselves. So I asked myself the question, well, what do you know? I know rubies and sapphires from my past mining experience and I’m standing in the ruby and sapphire capitol of the world. So lets go find a family to do business with, one thing led to another, I found the right family and its been uphill from that point on. Unlike most jewelry stores that buy from repping groups, who buy from importers, who buy from jobbers that represent the families that make these products. I circumvent all of those by buying directly from the family that makes all of our product line. The prices that you will see are basically wholesale prices. I sell for $299, any jewelry store will sell for over $2,000.
I still love the tackle shop, but tackle shops are in serious decline. Right now there are only 5 of us on the South Shore, so we need a second income just to survive. And thank the stars that I built an addition onto our present shop to insure that Fore River Tackle will always be around.
