Tune Up on Trout Mystery Trip: Report
by Patrick Paquette

March 30, Hyannis MA

The weatherman forecast it would be in the forties all day, so none of us were suprised that at 6:30 am on the
morning of March 30, it was in the low thirties.  Ten MSBA members met at the Exit 6 rest area off Route 6 on
Cape Cod.  After pleasantries and introductions, and getting a fresh hot cup of coffee, the first MSBA Mystery
Trip Convoy headed out of the rest area and toward our destination.

Although I anticipated because word is out that early season Trout Stocking is underway, we were all suprised
to find only one car in the parking lot when we arrived.  The wind was blowing about 15mph which was not
welcomed as the air alone felt to be below freezing.  Even the trees had icicles hanging on the low branches.
Those of us that began by casting and retrieving lures found our guides to be icing up as we searched for Trout.

As our group spread out along the shoreline, MSBA Digital Media Coordinator Jim Dow and the man that
would become the star of this trip, Bob, both caught Rainbow Trout.  After a couple hours many of us became
bored as the fish were just not cooperating on this morning.  Some of us wondered around, checking an
abutting pond to see if the fish might be there, but nothing we tried to turn the day around this early was working.

Just as we were determining that it was time to move to a different location, we noticed a new member, "Bob"
was over a mile away from us and looked like he was going to wait along the entire shoreline.  I decided we
should leave him a note explaining where the group was going but we could not remember his name.  We
decided since we knew he is a Dermatologist, we would give him the MSBA nickname of "Doc."

Seven of us (two members left to go to their favorite pond and "Doc" was still wading) made a move to the
complete opposite side of the pond we were fishing.  Upon our arrival we were reminded how funny winds on
Cape Cod can be.  Our first stop had the wind in our face and now that we were across the massive pond,
looking directly across at our prior location, the wind was still in our face.  Go figure?

We spread out again and began to fish.  After a while of getting a few hits but no fish caught and witnessing two
pairs of non related MSBA anglers walk in from a distant point with fish and watching what looked like anglers
on the point catching fish, a couple of us decided to move.  When we finally got to the new spot at the point we
realized "Doc" had waded around the whole pond and passed us to find the fish before the rest of us.  Big and
Little Danny Grafton of Stripa Tackle fame were wading on the other side of the bowl and we could not tell if
they were catching.  The new point found five of us finally catch some fish, however the true star of the day was
the man now called "Doc" as he was putting on a Trout lesson and caught what I am guessing was a dozen
Rainbows.

At the end of the day the estimated total fish caught was about 20 in total.  My better half and MSBA Secretary
instructed me to invite all for a hot lunch and three of us drove back to my house for a hot bowl of soup and hot
dogs, which hit the spot and then some. We all had a good time despite the cold and some more members
have learned what these things we call MSBA Mystery Trips are all about.  I want to thank all that participated
and to those that are reading this report and want to know where we were fishing, it's called a Mystery Trip for a
reason and if you come next time, you won't have to ask the same question.  Have a nice Day?
