Magazines for the Troops By Mike Glennon July 9, 2007 Our drive to collect fishing magazines to be sent to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan was a success well beyond my expectations. We were able to deliver upwards towards a thousand magazines to the National Guard for distribution and the number and enthusiasm of the volunteers who worked to label magazines was, to say the least, refreshing. Special mention and thanks has to made to Naurice and Rosemary Quirke who took the time to deliver the bulk of the magazines to the membership meeting before heading for Logan to pick up their soon to be deployed with the 101st airborne son. The same for Member Norm Cedarstrom who took charge of the magazines, brought them home, unloaded them, loaded them up several days later to take them to my place, then delivered them to the National guard. This will be, I am afraid, the last collection of magazines for distribution to our troops until another means of distribution can be found. While I was reassured that the guard WILL see that this batch of magazines WILL be distributed to our troops they will not be able to do it again. It seems that even with all the shipments of men and equipment that must be going to and from the combat areas the Department of Defense has to mail everything of this nature. Evidently, with all the things that being offered to be sent to the troops, the postage due would wipe out the budget in a day. Go figure. All in all though I think the club and the volunteers did themselves proud. Mike Glennon MSBA HOMEPAGE |
